OSB
OSB increased another $10/msf this week as inventories continue to tighten in most regions across the nation.
SYP
#1 SYP took its largest decrease across all dimensions overall since April. This was largely due to 2x12s drastically dropping in price. 2x12x8s dropped by $60/mbf this week while all other lengths in 2×12 dropped $30 to $35.
2x4s came down around $5 while 2×6, 8, and 10 fell between $10 and $15.
Low grade SYP, #3 and #4 also took its largest decrease since April as prices dropped around $12. This marks two consecutive weeks with near double-digit decreases in low grade SYP which is substantial considering prices have remained very flat since Spring. Many traders are seeing an ongoing lack of demand as most mills are desperately trying to move low grade trucks. Look for deep discounts on volume buys!
SPF
Although SPF prices continue to soften, they are doing so very slowly as there has not been more than a $5 drop in a given week for 2 months. However, the decreases are beginning to add up as prices have fallen nearly $50/mbf the past three months.
With the dog days of summer ending in most of the country and nicer weather on the horizon; many traders are anticipating at minimum an increase in demand as builders work longer hours. But many are speculative as to whether there will be enough change in demand to get prices on an upward trend.
