SYP
Southern yellow pine settled into a quiet week ahead of the long holiday weekend, and the framing numbers landed close to flat overall. In the #1 grade, moves were small and mixed — narrow 2×4 and 2×6 widths added $5 to $10/mbf, while wider 2×8 through 2×12 sizes gave back $5 to $10/mbf in spots.
The #2 grade told a sharper story. Narrow 2×4 and 2×6 widths pushed higher, up $5 to $15/mbf, while 2×8, 2×10, and 2×12 in that grade fell $10 to $15/mbf across the board — so the real split this week runs narrow-versus-wide rather than #1-versus-#2, with wider dimension giving up ground in both grades while narrow dimension held or gained.
Sellers called it “Labor Day dull,” and that showed in the pace — most of the week’s business was buyers topping off immediate job needs rather than building inventory, and a lot of offices were quiet well before Friday. Expect that same slow pattern to carry into next week until normal buying resumes after the holiday, with wider dimension needing a real reason to firm back up.
Low grade held mostly steady — #3 eased about $5 on 2×8 and 2×10, and #4 was flat across the board.
SPF
Spruce-pine-fir eased modestly this week, off roughly $2 to $5 across most items. Studs softened more than framing dimension, down $5 to $10, with 2×6 studs leading the pullback while 2×4 studs held flat.
By width, 2x6x16 led the declines, down $10, while 2x4x16 was one of the few items to gain, up $5.
Look for SPF to stay similarly quiet in the near term — demand is tied mostly to pre-holiday coverage and scattered job needs, without a clear catalyst yet in either direction.
OSB
OSB moved higher this week after sitting flat for months — 7/16″ panels were up $6 to $10 in North Central and Eastern Canada, and the Southwest saw a sharper jump, up $20 to $26 over three weeks, with spot loads reportedly trading $200 to $210 per thousand square feet. Some buyers flagged that the jump looked to be driven more by secondary-market flipping than by real mill-level tightness, which could mean prices give some back if that supply shows up over the next few weeks.
