Sales activity in the Southern Pine market slowed significantly this week. Despite the drop in momentum, mills held firm on pricing, supported by tightened supplies from recent curtailments and expected holiday production cutbacks.
Nearly all dimensions saw a $5/mbf increase with only a few maintaining a $10/mbf increase.
SPF trading slowed this week, with price momentum fading. The initial reaction to the 10% Canadian tariff has cooled, and some mills have shortened their workweeks due to soft demand.
2x4s increased by only $5/mbf, and 2x6s rose by $10/mbf, reflecting a subdued but steady tone.
It seems like the main feeling in the market as we come to the end of the year is that prices will at least stay steady. If it were not for the growing number of mills already lowering production, prices would likely be falling fast. However, with many mills now producing much less than anticipated, this should keep supplies tighter than normal.
OSB
Very large volumes of OSB were recorded being sold this week which will help to get prices to trend up as we head into November. Many of the buys though were still sold at nearly the same rate that OSB has maintained this summer.
