SPF
With the anti-dumping duty rates announcement being a week behind us, causing SPF to increase $30 a thousand bf overnight, this week price fluctuations seem to be somewhat back to normal in SPF.
Both 2x4s and 2x6s increased around $10 on all lengths. We seen mills and traders much more apt to want to quote this week compared to the past few as they were tip-toeing around the inevitable increase that has now come.
We expect that SPF will continue to slowly rise in the coming months with demand staying steady as nice fall weather will keep builders without excuse.
The gap between SYP and SPF (when comparing apples to apples in dimensions) is quite substantial now: a 2x4x16 in SPF is around $8.27 a board and in SYP $4.70. No matter the gap, builders will continue to use SPF in their framing needs given it’s perks.
2×4 studs increased another $20mbf this week which brings the total increase to $50 in 2 weeks. This is a little over .25 cents a board higher in just two weeks.
SYP
SYP prices did not change at all this week. It is very hard to tell what the next month in SYP will look like as the SPF increases are likely to eventually send ripples through the SYP market as well. It is possible that prices in SYP will level out for at least 2 more weeks before following SPF in a slow climb until winter begins to cool things down.
Mills continue to offer extremely low prices on low grade materials and sellers are anxious to move stock. If you use low grade material, now is a great time to stock up.
OSB
No change in OSB prices, some mid-week numbers even showed another drop around $5 but for the most part we are seeing pricing as it has been the past month or more with OSB still holding at the bottom dollar pricing.
