SYP

What most were anticipating as a steady decline in SYP prices has now turned to prices drastically declining over the past two weeks.

2x4s and 2x6s are especially the leaders here as they both fell $40/mbf this week. And for more context, as an example, 2x4x16s #2s have dropped $100/mbf in 3 weeks. This volatility in the market is leaving many traders frustrated. Especially with the backlog of trucks that are waiting to be shipped in the south due to the ongoing trucking crisis, many traders have trucks that are waiting to ship that they bought at much more expensive prices than today’s prices.

2x8s fell around $30/mbf, while 2x10s and 2x12s are on a more normal trajectory falling downward $10 to $15/mbf.

We also saw a double digit decrease in low grade lumber, around $13/mbf on #3 which is the largest one week decrease we have seen since last May.

SPF

Studs, on the other hand, took on an increase this week as supplies seemed to tighten. Prices only came up another $6/mbf on average, but it’s still worth mentioning as SPF is not following the path of SYP.

2×4’s and 2×6’s in SPF hardly moved. 2x4x16’s did fall around $10/mbf so we could be seeing some softening in the SPF market as well, but it is likely not to fall like SYP has as most traders don’t see much room left to go down in the SPF market.

OSB

Prices still have not gone up in OSB. Many mills seem to be grasping at straws in seemingly higher quotes with no orders to follow as buyers still have leftover stock from the winter drop.
