SYP

#2 SYP took on the most increases this week.

Most all dimensions increased anywhere between $10/mbf and $15/mbf. And 16’ lengths in most widths even rose $20/mbf or more. Spring weather hitting across the south has brought in the spring surge of builders needing material.

#1 Material also increased but only around $5/mbf to $10/mbf.

SYP had an average weekly decrease during (only) three weeks this year, which happened to be the last three weeks. The fact that prices are already rising again after decreasing for only three weeks likely indicates we will see prices remain very firm if not steadily increasing for most of spring. With that being said, now would be the time to buy.

Some buyers are even speculating on availability becoming an issue mid spring. As demand increases, mills may be slow to bring back their normal employee numbers since decreasing last fall.

Low grade stayed steady for two weeks and now prices are on the rise as they took on a $5/mbf increase this week.

SPF

SPF has now had five weeks with nearly no price changes.

This week we did see a very small increase in 2x4s which could be an indication that SPF will follow closely behind SYP. 2x4x16 is the most common size in building and so the fact that the 2x4x16 in SYP increased rapidly shows that demand has officially spiked for that dimension. Builders in the south use SYP and builders in the north use SPF interchangeably so it is just a matter of time before SPF follows SYP.

Expect price increases next week in SPF.

OSB

Another slow week in OSB as prices remained unchanged. Mill out put is continuing to keep up with demand which is not allowing mills to raise prices so that they can keep material moving.

Spring will lend to more demand and likely allow mills to possibly begin raising prices.
