SYP

Nearly all dimensions and grades of SYP took on double digit increases this week.

In SYP #1 and #2: 2x4s increased around $25/mbf and 2x6s rose $15/mbf

Nearly all other lengths came up $10/mbf to $15/mbf.

Most talk about the spikes in prices were around a surge in immediate demand this week. Likely with warmer weather in the south the past two weeks projects that have been on hold all winter are back in action.

However, demand is not the only thing increasing prices as gas prices also spiked this week due to international conflicts. One broker referred to trucking currently being a “nightmare” right now with the spike in sales and low truck availability.

We doubt that prices will come down any time soon. The main concern that we have for many in weeks to come will be lack of supply at the mills for prompt shipments which could potentially lead to delays in lumber availability. With that being said, now is the time to stock for spring demand.

Low grades also took on a $10/mbf increase this week which now has #3 prices up $100/mbf since last November.

SPF

SPF has been slow the past five weeks with hardly any changes.  However this week saw a nearly $10/mbf increase, especially in 2x4s. 2x6s only came up around $5/mbf.

Stud prices also came up around $10/mbf.

You can expect that SPF will begin to rise right along with SYP in the weeks to come. Look for double digit increases next week in SPF.

OSB

Another slow week in OSB as prices remained unchanged. Mill output is continuing to keep up with demand which is not allowing mills to raise prices so that they can keep material moving.

Spring demand will likely allow mills to begin raising prices.
