OSB

To everyone’s surprise, OSB is holding at its bottom prices for weeks now. Deep discounts were still easy to find this week. If you have any extra space for excess stock, we suggest filling it with OSB as the current prices may be hard to get back to as the year progresses.

SPF

Hardly any movement in SPF this week with studs remaining flat, 2x4s increasing $4 and 2x6s decreasing $4.

Great deals are still out there but prices do seem to be tightening up. With the 2x4s only increasing $4 this week and $2 last week; it is possible this is a sign that SPF prices will increase in the coming months and will increase slowly.

With 11 weeks straight of decreases and now prices on showing increases, it is the best time to buy SPF; especially with summer builds ramping up demand very soon.

SYP

Another week of double-digit price decreases in SYP in all grades. GREAT prices were easy to be found from MSR to #4. We are now on 5 weeks straight of price decreases and suggest that buyers begin shopping to stock up on SYP.

Although it is hard to tell if SYP prices will hit their bottom next week of in 3-4 weeks, it does seem that it will be a quick bounce back in the other direction once they do hit the bottom.

The best deals ( when comparing thousand board foot prices across all dimensions) are in 2x6s and 2x8s; it is hard to imagine prices getting any lower than the prices we saw this week on these two dimensions. We also saw $25 decreases on 2x4s and 2x10s this week as sellers were open to negotiations especially when buying larger volume. 2x12s still remain fairly tight but prices are still falling.

Low Grade SYP

#3 and #4 SYP did take another week of dropping around $11. Prices do seem to be at the floor now on low grade SYP. How much inventory mills still have needing to move will dictate how long the prices will remain where they are.

This is the first week of the year where it really seems like a great time to buy any and all of your lumber needs. SPF and OSB prices had been dropping since May and SYP prices have fallen around $80 the past month. It is hard to go wrong buying at this time.
