July 11, Lumber News

SYP

All widths in SYP have officially hit their bottom prices as 2x12x20 was the only dimension that took a decrease this week.

2x6s and 8s are on a steady pattern of increasing $10-$15 each week. It is likely they will continue to sustain this pattern at least through July.

As expected, 2x10s and 12s their last week of double digit decreases last week with both staying unchanged in this weeks print. With 2x4s increasing $10 this week, you can expect that the 10s and 12s will also begin following this trend next week.

With all #2 and better grades in SYP now on their way up; prices are likely to sustain a pattern up through summer. There are many mixed opinions as to what the SYP market will do come fall with the Canadian Anti-dumping duties to likely send ripple effects through all lumber species.

#4 material had another week of a $5 decrease and many traders are anxious to pass on deals to move material. It is a great time to buy #4 SYP!

SPF

SPF is now on it’s 4th week straight of price increases. Although prices have not skyrocketed, it seems price increases are maintaining a steady pace of $10-$15 a week on average.

Specific lengths like 16’ and 12’ are still particularly hard to find at good deals, especially in 2x4s. The mills will continue to raise prices as demand increases.

Mixed tallies continue to become more difficult to find as mills are over sold on particular sizes and are less likely to fulfill very mixed trucks.

OSB

Deals in OSB are still lingering but are becoming noticeably more difficult to find. We expect to see prices in the green (an increase) in the next week or two which would be the first in a while since OSB prices have had now 18 weeks straight with no price increases.

Many buyers shopping for “brand-specific” loads are becoming frustrated as some mills have now taken themselves off of the market temporarily. This is likely due to their excess inventories finally being sold off.
