SYP
Southern yellow pine prices moved lower again this week, making it the 5th straight week of decreases in SYP.
#1 grade was down $10 to $15/mbf across most items — an even move from 2×4 through 2×12, with no single width standing out.
#2 grade fell harder, off around $15/mbf on average, but it wasn’t spread evenly. Narrow widths — 2×4 through 2×10 — took the brunt of it, down anywhere from $10 to $25/mbf, while 2x12s held much closer to flat, off just $0 to $10/mbf in most cases.
Low grade slipped too, down $5 to $10/mbf on most #3 and #4 items, with the narrower widths giving up the most ground.
SPF
Spruce-pine-fir mill prices eased again this week, down around $5 to $10/mbf on most random-dimension items. 2×4 was the clear laggard, off about $15/mbf, while 2×6 and wider held much closer to flat.
Studs told a similar story, down around $15/mbf on average, with the weakness concentrated in the 9-foot trims, which fell as much as $35/mbf. Random Lengths flagged that as the softest spot in the western S-P-F market this week.
Demand stayed subdued with summer doldrums in full swing, and buyers kept pushing for discounts to help mills clear built-up inventory. No real change in tone expected until demand firms back up.
OSB
OSB stayed close to flat this week — the structural panel composite ticked up about a dollar, basically a non-move.
