SYP
Southern yellow pine kept sliding this week. #1 grade averaged down around $10 to
$15/mbf across the board, with 2×6 and 2×8 leading the way lower while the wider 2×10 and
2×12 held up better, off closer to $5 to $10/mbf. #2 grade moved the same direction and
about the same range, maybe just a touch softer than #1, with narrow 2×4 and 2×8 the weak
spots there as well.
It’s more “summer doldrums” talk out there. Buyers are mostly hunting for bargains or just
filling small inventory gaps. There is a little support building in the Midwest and Northeast,
where buyers are leaning on higher grades of SYP in place of tight Canadian and European
spruce, so that’s one thing that could put a floor under this before long.
Low grade (#3/#4) held up better, down $5/mbf or less this week.
SPF
Western spruce-pine-fir also gave up a little ground, though not much. Narrow 2x4s were
the softest widths, down roughly $10 to $15/mbf, while 2×6 held much closer to flat. Studs
followed the same pattern, with the longer 2×4 lengths off $10 to $25/mbf.
One bit of good news: word that new duty rates on Canadian shipments likely won’t land
until October took some near-term pressure off the market, and supply stayed lean through
the chain. That combination gives this a decent shot at settling out rather than sliding
further in the next week or two.
OSB
OSB held flat again this week, no change on the print. Remember, these are FOB mill
numbers, so what shows up on your invoice can still move with freight even when the mill
price doesn’t budge.
