Another week of increases in SYP this week, now on a 12 week strong increase trend. There are still specific dimensions in SYP that we recommend buying now, and holding off if you can….
Best buys:
We are still finding great deals in 2x6s and 2x8s as these two dimensions are now the outliers compared to the other dimensions in SYP as they have only increased around $10-$15 ea in the past month.
Better buys:
2x12s are another dimension that we would recommend buying if needed as they have only increased around $15-$20 the past month.
Other:
As we await 2x4s and 2x10s to hit their ceiling, we highly recommend to wait on purchases for these two dimensions in SYP as prices continue to surge: both dimensions have spiked nearly $100 since February.
Low Grade:
For those of you using #4 grade material. Prices have been very slowly creeping up all year, but this week was the first since December that prices stayed flat with no change.
As we stated in last weeks news: Deals on 2x6s are easy to come by and we recommend buying as soon as possible as we anticipate prices to become steady to slowly increasing come late spring.
With 2x4s now on their 3rd week of decreases, it is a good time to buy them as well; BUT waiting 3-4 more weeks if possible would probably call for even more savings as we expect prices to hold on a decreasing trend at least 2 more weeks.
Studs took a $15 to $20 fall this week, which is surprising for usual market trends during the spring. Many are still blaming the tariff threats from earlier in the month to be the blame causing less volume being sold. We expect excess inventory will tighten at the mills and prices to flatten out in the coming weeks. If you need studs, now is a fine time to buy them.
We highly recommend capitalizing on great deals on OSB as prices continue to drop. OSB seems to have higher peaks and lower valleys (prices fluctuate more and quicker than dimensional lumber); so with OSB now being on 10 weeks without an increase, it is a great time to buy.
