Hello and welcome to Lumber news. We will begin this edition of lumber news
with SYP
SYP
Southern pine turned lower this week. What looked like a pause last week became a real pullback, with
the narrow widths taking the brunt of it. Mid-summer heat, humidity and slow job sites are pulling
demand out of the market.
#2 2x4s, 2x6s and 2x8s are all down $15 to $20. 2x10s eased $5 to $10, and 2×12 was the only width to
hold flat.
#1 held up much better, thanks to tight supply of the wide widths. 2x4s, 2x6s and 2x8s slipped $5 to $10,
but 2x10s and 2x12s actually inched up a hair on scarce production. Low grade was flat to down a couple
dollars.
SPF
SPF is now about the only thing still climbing. It came up around $5 on average, with 2x6s again carrying
it at $5 to $15 while 2x4s were flat. Tight supply out of Canada and Europe plus long order files keep the
pressure on.
Studs finally cooled and slipped a little on average, with the 2×4 trims giving back the most while 2×6
held up.
OSB
OSB mill prices were basically flat again, with the North Central up a token $5 on tightening supply and
everywhere else steady.
