SYP

SYP had another strong week of price increases as most prices jumped another $20/mbf.

2x4s and 2x6s did have a few widths that only increased $15/mbf.

This makes for the 5th consecutive week of price increases for SYP. The weekly trend has been like this since the first week of march: up $3, up $10, up $24, up $31 (which was 2 weeks ago), and up $18 last week. We will probably have at least 2 to 3 weeks yet of price increases to come, but likely not in the $30/mbf tier. Expect prices to increase around $15/mbf this week and maybe $10/mbf the next.

With that being said, buying now to cover April’s needs will still likely be cheaper than waiting until the end of April. Prices may be back down below the peak come May.

At our sister lumber yard and truss shop, we are still buying SYP above our minimum needs due to worries in delayed trucking that we are seeing happening across the nation. Getting loads locked down is one thing, getting them delivered is another.

SPF

SPF has had no huge spikes this spring, but is quietly creeping up. Prices have increased around $40/mbf over the past 5 weeks; although comparing that with SYP, which increased twice as much in the same time frame, SPF prices are beginning to seem rather reasonable even with prices slowly creeping up.

Prices increased around $5 to $10/mbf across the board last week.

OSB

Demand still hasn’t increased for the OSB market which is forcing mills to keep their relatively short staffs where they are and prices to remain soft for months now. Prices are still low and some mills are trying to get more for their OSB but are quick to take counters.
