The SYP lumber market is finally showing signs of softening for the first week this Spring. Although the average for all #2 grade SYP went up $1 total this week, we believe this is signs for prices to begin to at least level out if not decline.
The main indicators for this are the 2x4s and 2x10s (which have been increasing around $15-$20 each week for the past 6 weeks) as this week they only increased around $5. We still suggest giving these two particular dimensions in SYP a few more weeks to purchase if possible as prices will likely begin to decline, especially in 2x4s and 2x10s (as many traders know they are at a premium and are awaiting prices falling).
Best buys:
2x6s actually went down another $5 this week. Since January, 2x6s have decreased a total of $5. With the high increases in the rest of SYP that we have seen this year, 2x6s are for sure the stand out best deal.
2x8s are right behind the 2x6s as they remained flat this week. We recommend buying them now as well.
Better buys:
Prices for 2x12s remained flat this week as well. 2x12s are somewhat “spotty” and deals still can be found.
Low Grade:
As we mentioned in last weeks news, low grades (#3 and #4) are finally showing signs of softening as well. This week was the first week since December that low grade SYP actually took a decrease. Although we do not expect any major changes at all in low grade, we did see more deals this week than previous.
SPF lumber market took another week of decreases across all dimensions and grades.
Both 2x4s and 2x6s are now on their 4th week straight with a double digit decrease. Even if decreases continue in the weeks to come, we highly recommend purchasing while great deals are on the market.
If you have ample stock on 2x4s, we would suggest waiting 2 more weeks as prices seem to continue to fall. As for 2x6s, we recommend buying what you need while prices are down.
Studs did decrease again this week but not as much as the week prior. This could be an implication for prices to begin flattening; however, a few more weeks may still bring some price decreases.
Our news on OSB has not changed from the week before:
We highly recommend capitalizing on great deals on OSB as prices continue to drop. OSB seems to have higher peaks and lower valleys (prices fluctuate more and quicker than dimensional lumber); so with OSB now being on 11 weeks without an increase, it is a great time to buy.
